Read broadly to find a broad topic related to a subject area of the IBDP. This should be some field of study in which you are passionate about so that you stay motivated throughout the EE process. You are currently in the 'Understanding Phase' of your research cycle. That means you shouldn't try to come up with the perfect Research Question. You should be asking TONS of questions, skimming, and scanning LOTS of literature on your subject area.

Once you start your EE journey, you need to set up your RRS (Researcher's Reflection Space). The RRS is where they will record what they are reading, planning, decision-making, writing, and thinking process about their essay. It's best to set it up right at the start! Insights and information recorded in the RRS are expected to form the basis for and find direct expression in the essay, reflection sessions and RPPF (Reflections on Planning and Progress Form).
You may have your personal notebook or planner that can be either a physical or virtual support tool. If they work for you then consider using them for the EE. It is highly recommended that you choose NOODLETOOLS as your EE RRS. NoodleTools allows you to track your sources, notes, and ideas in one place. It also allows you to organize notes, connect them to sources, accurately include in-text citations and turn your notes into an outline in Word document. Click for the How-to Guide of NoodleTools.
