Basic Outline Template

REMEMBER: Please also speak to your supervisor for subject specific guidance.

The Introduction Section: 3-5 bullet points including,

  • Hook or interest builder
  • Required to have your RQ
  • Focus or ‘Why this Topic’

The Literature Review Section: 3-5 bullet points including,

  • Treatment of topic
  • Annotations of the most important pieces of research
  • Methods section

The Body Section: 6-10 bullet points including,

  • Subject terminology (from the IB Course)
  • Research findings
  • Connections between research findings and IB Subject matter
  • Discussion of applied analysis
  • Evaluation of findings
  • Limitations to your findings

The Conclusion Section: 3-5 bullet points including,

  • Further research needed
  • Recommendations
  • Outcomes - restatement or reflection on initial RQ

Key Points of Methodology

REMEMBER: Please speck to your supervisor for subject specific guidance. This handout is written in general terms for all EEs.

  • It is highly recommended you have a written methodology section within the main body of the EE
  • Reference to methodology is also likely to appear in your introduction and conclusion
  • Having critical awareness of your methodology will influence all parts of your EE
  • Methodology is directly part of Criterion A: Focus and Method which is worth 6 marks

Six Required Elements of the Extended Essay

The structure of the essay is very important. It helps students to organize the argument, making the best use of the evidence collected.

There are six required elements of the final work to be submitted. More details about each element are given in the “Presentation” section.

  3. Introduction
  4. Body of the essay
  5. Conclusion
  6. References and bibliography

What is Literature Review?

A literature review is a summative evaluation of what has already been written (or said) about a given topic.
